Sanger girls cross country 2nd at Woodbridge meet

The Sanger High girls cross country team posted one of its best performances in program history with a second place finish in varsity girls at the 41st annual Woodbridge Classic Invitational meet in Irvine on Sept. 17. The meet draws some of the top ranked teams in the state and nation.
The Apaches were led by freshman Kinsley Allen, who placed fourth overall in a time of 17 minutes, 54 seconds. That’s a freshman school record at 3 miles and the 15th fasted frosh time in the state.
Teammates Alex Vaca (18:29), Anayacsi Diaz (18:40), Makenna Alvarez (19:21), Marcella Cuellar (19:53), Alayna Altaffer (20:17) and Zowie Hernandez (21:14) all posted personal lifetime bests. The times place Sanger second in the Central Section and 24th in state at three miles. Vaca’s time is 51st in state among all 10th graders.
Senior Leah Mendibles competed in the prestigious Bob Day Sweepstakes championship race (featuring top state and national runners) and finished 78th with a PR of 17:35, third best time in school history.
Sanger’s boys competed in the Doug Speck Sweepstakes race against top national competition, finishing 25th with while posting some of their fastest times. Senior Myles Nicacio placed 104th in 15:08, while other finishers were Sawyer Pugliese (15:13), Daniel Galvez (15:20), Gabriel Rivera (15:51), Gerardo Zuniga (16:00), Izak Samorano (16:30) and Jonathan Marcial (16:45).

Reedley High’s girls improved to 3-0 in North Yosemite League action and 4-4 on the season, posting home wins over Kingsburg (10-8 on Sept. 13) and Sierra Pacific (18-5 in a non-league contest on Sept. 19). The Pirates also have lopsided NYL wins over Exeter and Hanford West.
Reedley’s boys (5-8, 1-3 NYL) edged Sierra Pacific by a 7-6 score on Sept. 19, and traveled to Granite Hills on Sept. 20 before hosting Strathmore at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.

Sanger High swept its four games by a combined 48-21 score at last week’s Golden Eagle challenge at Clovis North High School, the closest an 8-6 win over Turlock. The Apaches (6-0) opened County Metro Athletic Conference play this week at Justin Garza (Sept. 20) and home against Bullard (Sept. 22).


Dinuba High placed second at the Redwood Invitational tournament in Visalia on Sept. 17, going 5-2 with victories over Sierra Pacific, Kingsburg, Mt. Whitney and Reedley. Bethany Moreno and Julie Ann Gerbrandt both turned in strong performances.
The Lady Emps (8-8) opened league play Sept. 20 at Hanford, and host Tulare Western on Sept. 22.
